How is Kindergarten going? How is the CDC?

Hey there everyone! Just wondering how everyone with new Kindergarteners is doing so far down there in LB. Our experience this year with P is VERY different from last year with C, in terms of how schools do things here. Very interesting.

And how is it going at the CDC? At first it seemed everyone was kind of down about it. Has it improved/settled down? Are you missing the way it used to be?

Still feeling a bit lonely up here in Calgary (although we have made friends with one neighbour family and even got invited to watch the hockey game at their house on Sat. night -- can't get more Canadian than Hockey Night in Canada, beers and pizza!!) The fact that the kids take the bus and that my police check for volunteering is taking forever (so I can't be in the classroom yet) has definitely been a little isolating. I'm hoping that will change soon. N and I are taking a Spanish for Parents class once a week, which is fun.

Some of you know that I came down with appendicitis 2 weeks ago and had to have surgery ... BOY DID THAT MAKE ME MISS ALL MY MOMMY FRIENDS IN LB!!! (Not that I wasn't already missing everyone a lot!) Luckily my mom was coming out to visit and just moved up her trip by a couple of days to come and help. Not sure what we would have done without her. (She stayed for a week.) I'm on the mend, but still have to try to take it easy. Since N's work hours are INSANE at the moment, it has been a bit of a challenge to keep everything together.

Anyway, I hope this finds everyone well and that Fall is going ok for you. It is already in the negative temps (Celsius) here at night and sometimes very chilly during the day and other days warmish. It is dark when we walk to the bus in the morning, just before 8. Eventually it will be dark when the kids go to school and when the come home.... Should be interesting! At least it is quite sunny most days though.

Missing everyone!
Heather

The feel at CDC is very different. I am doing the parent participation with Konrad and am feeling burned out since I am there two times a week, but he loves playing and feels very comfortable there. Louis has finally adjusted to Kinder. He has finally said he likes his teacher. He used to just say she is not nice like Mrs Bailey. I feel bad for any teacher having to live up to his expectations of Mrs Bailey being his idea of a teacher. He still includes Patrick in planning things. Stay warm and soak up as much sun as possible.

Heather...WE MISS YOU! I am so sorry we couldn't help with your appendicitis - I hope your recovery is going well. Kinder at New City is awesome...very developmentally appropriate...and I'm very appreciative of the no punishment, no reward philosophy.

And I second Stephanie, CDC is not the same...I suspect most of us will seek another school next year... Hugs and more Hugs to you and yours!

Oh Heather, appendicitis?? YUCK. That's awful. I really hope you're recovery is speeding up.

I'd love to hear your Kindergarten stories, when you get a minute.

PCC is just sad. It feels like a ghost town and the wonderful warmth and feeling of community seems gone. I'll run into somebody in the parking lot and it brightens up my day so much, but that's about the extent of it. I'm still mourning what was lost - for myself as much as for the kids.

On the bright side, Kid Works has been fantastic. The moms aren't nearly as friendly (though they aren't set up all that well for getting to know each other) but Miles seems to be loving it and getting a ton out of it.

hey heather... um i just dont think i could do the "cold" portion of living in canada. um, yeah.

1st grade is pretty much the same as K around our school, but autumn's teacher is stellar so we really like that. they have instituted more PE time and autumn does not like that. haha.

i think you are getting the picture of PCC... its just sad. i miss my friends. jack is not getting the same experience that autumn did. last week as we pulled into the parking lot, jack asked me if marli was going to be there. it continues to break my heart. i think a change of venue will be happening for us as well for fall 09. sniff sniff.

wow, that is SO SAD about PCC... i guess we were lucky for the time we had there while it was good. what a bummer! the day before yesterday, we were in Michael's (yay, they have those here too!) and something there reminded patrick of mrs. bailey. he said that he likes kindergarten, but that he misses mrs. bailey. she is pretty much an impossible act to follow!

glad to hear that kindergarten and 1st grade are going well where you are. cecilia is still sometimes a little peeved that she has to learn how to read in SPANISH TOO now, but otherwise she seems to be enjoying school and making friends. the age cut offs here are different (4 1/2 by start of K), so she is the oldest kid in her class, and way ahead in a lot of respects, but that is where the spanish comes in handy ... something new to learn is GOOD!

the approach here in kindergarten is VERY different than what we experienced last year at longfellow, and i think it suits patrick better. there is no colour-coded card system for discipline, but instead they follow steps for listening/action/restitution for inappropriate behaviour quite similar to what we learned at pcc.

also, while they ARE working on the alphabet and numbers, there is nowhere NEAR the push we felt last year to get to reading, etc. there is no homework (and almost none for c either) and there don't seem to be worksheets, etc. they have play stations -- sand tub, art, blocks, house, etc. and they are learning a lot about the cultures of spanish-speaking nations. this week all grades are preparing for a "Hispanic Parade and Assembly" in the gym on fri.

they seem to have a lot more PE (i think c would probably share autumn's consternation!)

anyway, there are MANY differences, but overall i'm finding them positive, which is good, because there are a LOT of things about living here in calgary (NOT canada, but THIS CITY) that i'm REAAAALLY not enjoying. cheers, ladies! i miss you!

We're moving to Canada...if Obama looses! --okay that's it for political stuff.

HOLA AMIGA! Como te extrañamos! Me alegra mucho tus mensajes--y me agotan, porque me hace recordar de los dias anteores, cuando todas pasabamos el tiempo jutas. Suspiro.

Trans: HI FRIEND! How we miss you! Your messages bring me much joy--and depress me, because they remind me of earlier days, when we would pass time together. Sigh.

Please let Patrick know that Isaac sends a BIG hello! In fact, if you email us your address, both Patrick and Cecilia will receive post cards. Gabe also sends one of his big warm smiles and "HI!"
